De La Vega Tortillas

Maria De La Vega was born in 1931 in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico—the birthplace of the world-famous “Sobaqueras” (arm-length flour tortillas). She mastered the art of making soft, heartwarming tortillas that became a staple of her family’s table.

In 1959, Maria immigrated to San Diego, California, where she raised her seven children, who grew up savoring her authentic Sonoran tortillas. She would rise as early as 4:00 a.m., mixing, kneading, and rolling tortillas by hand. Cooking them on a hot comal, she filled the house with the comforting scent of freshly made tortillas. By the time her children woke, a tall stack of warm, authentic Sonoran tortillas awaited them—a daily reminder of her unwavering love and dedication.

For Maria’s oldest son, Ruben—our co-founder—those early mornings held a special significance. Growing up with five older sisters, Ruben delighted in teasing them endlessly, as little brothers often do. But instead of scolding him, Maria would call him into the kitchen to teach him how to cook her cherished Sonoran dishes.

Amid laughter, lessons, and the magic of her cooking, Ruben discovered not just the recipes but the heart and tradition behind each dish. Those moments became some of his most treasured memories, shaping both his love for food and his appreciation for the culture that inspired it.
